The Portsea Retreat

Standard

I wanted to share some photos from a recent retreat I went on down at sunny Portsea on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. It is an old school camp that was set up in the 1940′s for under-priveleged children so that they could have a sea-side holiday and various health checks from doctors and dentists while they were there. These days it is hired out to various groups and although accommodation is somewhat basic, it is a great opportunity for crafty ladies to get together and create (with the added advantage of not having to cook or wash up all weekend!! Yay).

While I was there I had the chance to set up a mini-shop and and the Bali Pop (jelly rolls) were selling like hot cakes!

A couple of ladies were so keen to put the purchases to good use that they made up there jelly rolls and had a quilt top within a couple of hours!

    • A jelly roll is about 40 2.5″ strips across the bolt of fabric from the same range so they all go nicely together and you can make many patterns with minimal cutting. You can see all the jelly rolls in one of the buckets in the shop photo above and the orange/green quilt hanging behind is also made from a jelly roll. Hope that helps :)

  1. My quilting group does craft retreats but I haven’t been on one yet. It looks as though you have a great time. Maybe I will pluck up the courage to go next time one is on offer.

    • You should go – i’m sure you would enjoy it. The first time I went I was very nervous about the show and tell session on the Saturday night but I have since realised that everyone is very encouraging and you learn a lot from others. Where abouts does your group go?

      • THey go to a property not far from Bairnsdale,it’s called Coonawarrra Farm Resort. There is an unfinished objects weekend coming up in October, maybe I will go to that one.
